Meet with Olivier Mulin - Fashion stylist in the press and for major brands
Just to look at him, olivier mulin already seems to be someone straight out of a fashion magazine. from the school esmod in lyon, he began his career in the studios of big houses such as jean-paul gaultier and then decided to stand on his own two feet and put his imagination to the service of the fashion pages of trendy publications (wad, standard) . in addition to the press, he now works regularly with the label paul & joe. he recalls his job to us with humour and passion.
olivier mulin : we present a garment in a creative world because we want to show that it fits into a world that is the envy of today. to show an image of a woman who goes on to inspire women who read the magazines or who see the fashion shows or who fall upon on the image and say 'oh that appeals to me, i want to be like her' or 'i aspire to be her' or ' it tickles my fancy', and this picture makes me want to go and find this dress because it would suit only too well.
with the chance to meet people from many universes when i do advertising, when i do real fashion with paul & joe, it's not the same to do paul & joe womanswear and menswear, it's really interesting. i also deal with rock bands so music is yet another background. actually to put themselves in the shoes of a brand is the first step necessary for the stylist, or designer. it is not possible to do chanel spirit with someone else, with dior for example. that'd be stupid, it's not the point, it is really like playing a role.
when we do a job that makes you dream, there is a given moment when we cross, we go behind the curtain and in the wings where the sequins shine less brightly, even gorgeous clothes after a while, appear to be just part of a job. we are not marvelling over it every day even if it is still amazing. it is like a doctor who is caring for animals, it cool to say "oh this sweet little animal" but there is a real job behind it - and sometimes it's really complicated when it doesn't work, when we don't get what we want, sometimes the animal does not react. so it is a job and not any more only a dream.
